What are some of the most significant events in Canadian history?

The Battle of Vimy Ridge?

D-Day?

Recognition of women’s right to vote?

Pearson’s involvement in the Suez Canal Crisis?

Trudeau’s 1982 Constitution Act?

Tommy Douglas’s public healthcare?

Statute of Westminster?

Banting’s work on insulin?

Trudeau’s dealing with the October Crisis?

Add your thoughts on which of these, or any other Great Canadian moments, are the events that helped define and shape our maple-leaf nation to the way it is today.

1972 Summit Series between the Soviet and Canadian national ice hockey teams! An 8-game team which the Canucks won, 4-3. I actually did my high school history essay on this being one of the most important moments of Canadian history – not only because it demonstrated Canada as having the world’s best hockey players, but also as being a player in international relations and a symbol of Canadian liberal freedom against the USSR. A great source of national pride…

    1989 was a good year

The Free Trade Agreement between Canada and the US went into effect. The pact, later expanded through NAFTA, would profoundly alter the economic relationship between Canada and the United States.

I think, the biggest shaper of our history were the ships that came from England and France.

Both countries had a race as to who would be able to populate Canada sooner.

English always had more people coming,so to this day we are British, not French. And regardless of opinions…I think, that is good.

Not that British were good and perfect. But,because at least they are more open to the world and French seem to be more isolative.

The two super powers sought to rule Canada and in the end…England won, because there were more ENGLISH speaking people here….

And yes…...British influence in Canada has been huge. And up to 1976 …we were not totally free of it. But,even though..all our decisions are ours to make and we are not controlled from England…we still maintain friendly admiration to Royalty and friendly ties remain.

    Fancinating.

Other intresting part of history is the Mail order brides.

1862-1870 England sent the poor women who had no future in England to Canada.

Many were just barely out of their teens and they wanted to escape poverty in England and came here.

Men were waiting at the dock for the ladies and the amazing thing is…most of those marriages worked.

People were willing to work hard and sacrifice personal comfort in order to be free of class system and to be able to provide future for their children.

The ministers of the Anglican Church knew the only way they could stop the immorality in the New World was to provide wives to the men and let them settle down and form their own families.

Something about responsibility and work that brings the best out of people.Anyhow…the 100 women came and they made history.Women civilised the Wild West and started schools for children and Churches became center of the community and it pretty well…saved the wild west.Otherwise…who knows…if any of them would have been left alive after all the STD’s etc.

The thing…It has been said; “Women are the only civilising influence in a man’s life…” has a ring of truth to it…indeed.Women saved the day !

There are many books written on that and it is fancinating.

There are also books on Gold Rush in Canada and it is a study of its own. MORE LATER

Canada has many black spots on its history.Things that bring shame to us. Each nation and culture has their own and we are not unique in that regard.

    To mention few…Native Indian issues/Residental schools.Such a shame.

Other black spots in our history;treatment of Chinese people in Canada. The head tax.The seperation of families for 20 yrs or more. The poverty and suffering of Chinese people in Canada.

We could make ten lesson plans from each topic and go to any which direction with those topics.Much to learn.Canadian history…boring.Not. There is much there that is fancinating.Much…

Interesting! I’ve never heard of the mail-order bride before…

Regarding the black spots in Canadian history- how about the ship of Jews that tried to escape Nazi Europe back during WWII and were turned back by Mackenzie King? I’m pretty sure the same was done to others at some point of time, but this point touches me personally, so I’m throwing it in.
