High School History (Discussion)

I have to admit, I am a huge history fan, I find it extremely interesting to learn about the amazing, terrifying and unbelievable things that have happened in the past.

Though, Canadian History, at least in the classroom was terribly borning to learn. I found my teachings didn’t stray much past the fur trading of the Hudson Bay Company. While it is important to know there is so much more rich, interesting history Canada, especially in the evolution of Canadian Politics, has that never seemed to be covered.

What was your experiences in High School History (or Social Studies)?

For me too learning History was very boring in school (data!!) and a little less boring later (more problem orientated, but no cooperative learning in the University of Education, at least at that time, well about 100 years ago :)) ...
I became a history teacher although, because, like you, Adam, I found/find our history very interesting and important for the future.
Now you should (better not :-)) ask my students, how boring they find my history-lessons. It´s difficult, because there is so much (too much!) to read. Students don´t love reading …

Tatjana, I think you should really write some history lessons, I’d be one of your most willing students. I’m sure you’re full of really fascinating information. I’d especially love to hear about your view on Canada and I am really interested in seeing what you do with the German History community.

Adam, learnhub and you/guys motivate me so much doing things like that :))! But I have to share my time … Easter holidays are ending now … So what about sharing this work with my students :)) As I just ask in your learnhub-support
Yes, I also think that we could have a wonderful exchange of ideas over the Atlantic!
But do you know that I know almost nothing about Canada? Even nothing about fur-trade. Only that it´s the country, where cooperative learning was invented, fortunately!

It seems Canadian history is pretty unknown to other parts of the world. Even the United States. Even a lot of Canadians don’t know much about Canada’s history. I bet if I ask a lot of younger Canadian teenagers they wouldn’t even know what the October Crisis was

This is exactly why the internet is a great tool for anyone (everyone!). I am rigorously searching for a really motivated Canadian Historian that wants to write a bunch of content here!

I agree my high school history eduction made Canadian history out to be rather dry and boring. It wasn’t until later in life that I returned to reading about Canadian history and began to enjoy it. Now it wasn’t about memorizng dates and strange bits that I had no interest in just to pass the test. What I enjoy about Canadian history and find amusing to read (and some how memorized more events this way) was learning about personalities of characters. The people that outline Canadian history are great characters and many of them have strange quirks that you never learned in the text books.

I loved my history class, simply because my teacher was extremely entertaining and focused on important points – that is, less emphasis on dates and numbers and more of the consequences of those events. He weaved interesting tales, rather than spout boring things from the textbook. I think a good teacher can make any subject interesting. Most importantly, they have to motivate you if you want to learn and be interested. He was a great inspiration in learning about history, and has made me want to be a teacher ever since – so I can inspire people just like him too!
